Flora of the Fells aims to promote greater public understanding of the importance of Cumbria’s uplands, their management and conservation through a programme of festival events, education projects and publications.
Key aims:
- To increase understanding, awareness and enjoyment of Cumbria’s uplands including their significance and value to the public;
- To explain why these landscapes and habitats are key to the health and wellbeing of the landscape, economy, communities, people and natural resources of the region;
- To highlight good examples of sustainable land management in Cumbria and elsewhere;
- To give schools and young people across Cumbria direct experience of the outdoor classroom, enable them to discover what makes the wild uplands special, undertake hands-on activities to explore biology, ecology and geology to understand what shapes the landscape and to establish longer-term links with local sites;
- To help shape both the vision and policies towards more sustainable upland land management in Cumbria.
The project aims to promote these aims to a wide range of people including the farming community, local residents, local businesses, visitors and policy makers.
